If you watch sports very much you have probably seen the incredible boldness of so many college and professional athletes sharing their faith lately. It has been amazing to see. Football players wearing Bible verses, like Romans 3:22, others sharing their testimonies in interviews and even coaches celebrate the baptisms of players after practices. Our God is on the move, and there is truly a movement toward more boldness for Christ in sports today.
Here are a few examples from the recent College Football Playoff Championship Game between Ohio State and Notre Dame:
Why are we seeing this movement? First of all, faith in Christ is the most important commitment in one’s life. When you are a Christ-follower, you realize sports are great, but Christ is eternal. I do think you want to promote what is most important to you. Great lesson about what is most important to us. Second, with Christ, there is peace as Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.” Sports are so pressure-packed that Christ is truly the only way to peace. This is true for all of us, but sports accentuates the pressure even more. Great lesson here for us as well. Finally, I do think these athletes understand they have a platform to use for the glory of God. That platform window can close quickly - the NFL stands for “Not For Long.” Therefore they are making the most of their moment to point others to Jesus. Wow! What a great lesson for us as well in our schools, workplaces and communities - we all have a platform to use to promote ourselves or God’s Kingdom.
There is a movement of God taking place. Let’s embrace this moment. Let’s be bold and share our faith with others.
Overall, I believe we are seeing Revival happening in our land. We have prayed for years and other Christ-followers have prayed for this all their lives. There is a movement of God taking place. Let’s embrace this moment. Let’s be bold and share our faith with others. Let’s not live passive lives, but see that this is our opportunity to join God in what He is doing and to share His Good News with others. Can you imagine what God could do if everyone who said they were a Christian truly lived their life with spiritual boldness? We would see the whole world come to know Christ.
Let’s pray for all our brothers and sisters in Christ in the sports world that God will fill them with His Spirit and speak through them. And, let’s pray for us to have this same boldness for our personal Savior. This is our time. Let’s make the most of it for the glory of our great God!
