I shared a story on Sunday about my oldest daughter, Grace. When Grace was leaving to go back to college this August, she left a note on our kitchen island that said something like, “I am a lucky duck for being a part of this family. I love you all. When you see a duck just think about me :).” Then, she had a little duck sitting on the note (it was not a big rubber duck like those in jeeps, but a small plastic duck). We laughed and thought the note was so sweet. We love our family, and we are all very close. But, that was not the end.
I went to get a drink out of the fridge and to my surprise - there was another duck. Then, I went to my dresser to put on some shorts and there was another duck. Then, my desk. And, we started finding ducks everywhere. We called Grace and she said, “I got up in the middle of the night and I hid ducks all over so you all would think about me. There are 260 ducks!” What?!?! The fact is, we are still finding ducks today - 3 months later!
Grace hiding ducks for us to find was funny, but it definitely worked. We already thought and prayed for Grace often, but seeing the ducks has amped it up. Truth is we have left some of the ducks out in order to remind us to pray for her. There are still some ducks on tables, near plants, in our cars and on some art frames. We are grateful for these reminders.
In a similar way, God has left us reminders every day to think about Him. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech…” God gives us reminders every day of His Majesty and Presence. When we see the beauty of the sky, the vastness of the stars, feel the gentle breeze, these are all a God who says, “Remember Me!” God is constantly drawing us to Himself and reminding us of who He is - the Sovereign God over all the Universe who loves each of us, personally.
Our lives can be busy and overwhelming. We can put our noses down and try to grind it out each day. We are entering into the Holidays which have been called, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” But, they are also the, “Most Busy Time of the Year.” When things get crazy with family, work, travel, cooking, cleaning, gifts and more, then at some point take the time to look up. Instead of only looking down at your phone, your calendar, your Netflix, your problems and simply trying to make it through, look up and see God. Be reminded by the changing colors of the trees, the beautiful rolling hills :), the rivers and the stars that our God is still there and He is faithful. When you see a sunrise think, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23.
We are all so blessed to be a part of the family of God. By God’s grace, and the sacrifice of His Son Jesus, we have been adopted into His family. We should be forever grateful. Our Heavenly Father is with us and He is for us. He reminds us of His Presence every day. As the Psalmist wrote, “I lift my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2. Let me encourage you today to look for God, and then be reminded that He loves you! You are forever His. You are truly a “lucky duck.”
